Rodents Are More Dangerous Than You Think

Do you have telltale signs of a rodent infestation in your home or business? If you see one rodent, you can bet there are a dozen more that you haven’t seen. And if droppings are present, this suggests the rodents have found a nice shelter for themselves in that area. There are countless other red flags, as well, and they all mean one thing: You need to start the elimination process ASAP. Why the urgency? They’re just harmless little critters, aren’t they? Well, not exactly…

Rodents Are a Health Hazard

Sure, mice and rats are highly unlikely to bite you (unless they’re provoked). However, their main cause for danger lies in the fact that they carry lots and lots of harmful diseases. When they’re running through your kitchen cabinets, along your countertops, and underneath your plumbing, they’re spreading disease throughout your whole property. Their bacteria and germs land on your food, dishes, dining areas, and bathroom surfaces, which means they’re essentially delivering sickness straight to you and your family.

How to Eliminate Your Rodent Problem

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair for us to scare you about rodents without providing you with information on how to handle them!

First, here are some of the strongest signs you’re dealing with a rodent infestation:

• Droppings. They’re typically shaped like small grains of rice with black-to-brown coloration. Rodents leave droppings on the move, so they’ll be found in a trail, not a pile.
• Ammonia smell. Rodent droppings don’t have a strong scent, but their urine has a detectable, ammonia-like smell.
• Teeth markings. Rodents are able to chew their way through cardboard boxes and plastic bags–so, if you see teeth markings on your food containers, get rid of them immediately. They also like to gnaw on hard surfaces to keep their teeth short, so you may notice signs of gnawing on cabinets and woodwork.
• Nesting materials. If your property has piles of soft, warm materials (like laundry, furniture stuffing, shredded paper, etc.), these are prime candidates for rodents to build their nests in. Look for droppings nearby.

As soon as you observe any of these signs, your next step is extermination. The most effective methods involve traps and/or poison baits. Some people may attempt to locate the rodent borough and eliminate the infestation at its source, but there’s only a 50% chance of you actually locating it. That’s why we typically choose to lay traps and poison in order to effectively exterminate the intruders one by one.
